I love living in Asheville!

Because of the insane amount of breweries here, Asheville has become a destination for beer lovers. But, believe it or not, there’s a lot more to do in Asheville than drink beer.

Have you ever wanted to run away with the circus?

Well, you practically can if you’re in Asheville. You can take juggling lessons, aerial classes on the silks and trapeze, and clowning classes at one of my favorite spots, ToyBoat Community Art Space (in South Asheville).

If you’re more of a spectator, you can watch the circus shenanigans at events hosted by ToyBoat like the Asheville Vaudeville Shows or the Juggling Festival.

There may not be a beach, but there’s still lots of water.

The French Broad River, which flows through town, is really fun to tube down in the summer. The bars along the river have “let out” spots where you can hop off the river and hop into the bar for a drink or a snack.

There are also lots of waterfalls and “secret” swimming holes that we can’t talk about on the internet for fear of our favorite spots getting overrun. 😉 But trust me, they’re out there. And if you ask anyone offline, they’ll totally tell you.

Want to visit a town where there are close to as many theatre companies as breweries?

Well, Asheville’s the place. There are so many theatre companies that it’s actually impossible to see every show. Trust me, I’ve tried. The companies here vary from community theatre to professional.

The Montford Park Players stick to Shakespeare, but they perform it in an outdoor amphitheater (located in Montford) where you can bring a picnic and blanket to sit on the ground. That way, if you get bored, you can have a snack or take a nap. And you can bring in your own beer and wine! And it’s free!

There’s also so much music in Asheville.

When I first moved here in 2002, it was mostly blue grass and jam bands. Not anymore! With The Orange Peel (Downtown) and Mew Mountain (South Slope) bringing in more diversity and bigger names, we get a great variety now. I mean, Talib Kweli is playing the Orange Peel for New Years!! So awesome!! 🙂

Hooray for Asheville! 🙂
